As I'm a live-in caregiver for my elder Mom, I feel her moods more sensitively than I did when living in a different state. In the last few weeks we've been grieving the loss of my sweet Aunt Nonnie, Mom's sister.
They were really close. It's hard for my Mom. It’s heartbreaking for me to watch Mom’s grieving process.
Especially in a pandemic where hugs are not a safe social distance. Eighty-one years of a beautiful, harmonious, loving sistership is not easy to let go of.
We talk about what we can appreciate and our favorite memories of my dear aunt. I listen to Mom tell stories of her childhood and the many years of joint ventures, including our family upbringing that she shared with her sister.
We focus on our treasured moments with my aunt. We dwell on how much having my aunt in our lives positively impacted us. We also are allowing space and gentleness as the grieving process is fresh and requires this kind of care. I offer many hugs and tissues to Mom, too.
We Ride The Same Wave Of Obstacles
Our situation reminds me that when I'm struggling, there are others facing difficulties, too. It's as if we're riding the same wave of obstacles, separated only by personal specifity.
If you’re experiencing grief or another kind of adversity, my heart supports you in prayer and thought. Trust that prayers are coming your way from many directions when you need them the most.
Taking care of yourself during times of challenge can help lighten the load of suffering. The combination of calming or upbeat music with the joy and beauty of nature lowers stress, improves wellness, and lifts mood.
