Many young children learning piano struggle with lack of balance and focus because their feet can’t reach the floor when sitting at the piano. Barb Gray and her fiancé, Scott Matthew, have innovated a wonderful new product for young piano students!
Their adorable footrest solves that problem and more!
Wisconsin Piano Playground piano studio owner/teacher, Barb Gray has taught piano since 2001. Her piano studio currently has 53 students. Almost half her students are small enough to need a footrest.
The Ideal Piano Footrest provides the young piano learner with better form, posture and hand position by creating a foundation for body balance.
The design uses an enclosure on both sides of the child’s feet, which aids the child’s focus by encouraging less wiggling and fidgeting.
The footrest is easily adjustable, with height options between two and eight inches. How? Like sliding out a drawer. Simply pull the support shelf out, and select a different slot for a new height option.
What I love about the design is its fun piano keyboard image, the ease of adjusting to accommodate piano students, and the soft handles for safety and ease of lifting.
If you have a young child learning piano or interested in starting, I highly recommend getting this creative tool for young music learners!

Scott and Barb also plan to launch a kickstarter campaign for the footrests, mid-January 2020.
Barb has already tested out Scott’s footrest design with her piano students.
“IT WAS AMAZING! One really enjoyed finding middle C with his feet and the others liked it a lot and felt very comfortable. I have many students who need the ‘floor’ closer to them and after trying many other things, this really seems to work.
It was easy to slide on the carpet and super light to move around. Moving the step from student to student was very easy as well.”
The idea came from Barb wanting something for her piano students whose feet don’t reach the floor. Scott hunted for something that “was pretty, sturdy, and easy to adjust the height,” but couldn’t find the right thing,
“So I made her one, with advice I got from other teachers.
It works great, and kids have better posture and hand position.
Then I offered to make extras, for other teachers who want one for their studio.
The response has been big. Actually, a bit too big.
If I try to make hundreds of these in my spare time, it’ll take forever. So we found a furniture company that will make them to our design.
But we don’t want to make a bunch, without making sure they will turn out perfectly.
So, we’re going to pay to make 10 samples, to be sure they are just right.
And we’re going to give them away, so we can get honest feedback on the design.
When we’re sure they’re just right, we’ll make as many as people want, for around $50.”
How does the footrest help the young music learner? Barb shares from her piano teacher perspective, “It’s just hard to play well, and learn well, with your feet dangling in the air. Playing needs leverage, and a "floor" to push against. This provides a "floor" so the legs are at the right angle.”
If you have younger piano students or a child from ages 3-10, this footrest will provide support, leverage, better physical form and posture. As younger, newer piano students aren’t yet ready to learn the piano pedals, there is no need for their feet to reach them.
(Barb suggests, “If you have a tiny advanced student, a pedal extender may work well.”)

I don’t receive any affiliated commission. I just think this product is great for young music learners and piano teachers!
